MFL MarMac Community School

Regular Meeting

Monday, January 13, 2025

 

The MFL MarMac Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors was held on January 13, 2025, in the library of the Monona Schoolhouse.

 

President, Gina Roys, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.  Members present at roll call were Tonya Meyer, Danielle Schlake, Roberta Hass, Aaron Schroeder and Josh Grau.  Dr. Jonathon Moser was absent.  Also, present Tim Dugger; Superintendent, Karla Hanson; Board Secretary, and Student Board Member, Mattie Hallberg.

 

Motion by Roberta Hass, seconded by Aaron Schroeder, to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Josh Grau, seconded by Tonya Meyer, to approve the consent items from the agenda as follows:

 

  • Minutes from December 11, 2024, Annual Board Meeting
  • Bills against the district as listed: General Fund: $118,055.94, Management: $0.00; Enterprise: $0.00; Capital Projects: $26,036.10; PPEL:  $34,782.68; Activity Account: $59,111.03, Food Service:  $23,471.30, Little Bulldog Childcare:  $5,744.09, Dr. Smith Childcare:  $1,980.74.
  • The Secretary’s Report, Activity Report and Food Service Report will be filed subject to audit.

 

The motion was unanimously carried.

 

Motion by Tonya Meyer, seconded by Danielle Schlake, to approve the following:

 

Resignations:      Pat Echard, Food Service Director

Denise DeVries, Transportation

Joyce Saacke, High School Secretary

Angela Rumph, 7th Grade Volleyball Coach

New Hires:          Linda Brainard, Food Service

 

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Tim Dugger gave a short presentation on the use of AI in education.  Artificial intelligence is a part of our daily lives, and the district is working to find the best ways to implement it into the classrooms.  Brett Jackson talked about how it is used in the middle school and the different products available to school districts.

 

Motion by Roberta Hass, seconded by Tonya Meyer, to approve the first reading of AI related policiies 605.8 AI in the Education Environment, and 605.8R1 AI Regulation.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Josh Grau, seconded by Danielle Schlake, to approve the Apple Purchase Lease for Laptops and Ipads.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Aaron Schroeder, seconded by Roberta Hass, to approve the School Budget Review

Risk/Dropout Prevention Program.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Tonya Meyer, seconded by Aaron Schroeder to approve the second reading with changes made per previous Board meeting of Board Policies:    903.5 Distribution of Materials, 903.5R1 Regulation, 904.1 Transporting Students in Private Vehicles, 904.2 Advertising and Promotion, 905.1 Community Use of School District Buildings and Equipment, 905.1R1 Regulation, 905.1R2 Fee Schedule, 905.2 Nicotine Free Environment, 905.3 Weapons in School, 907 Public Emergencies, 907.R1 Regulation.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Aaron Schroeder, seconded by Roberta Hass, to move the 1st Reading of the 400 Policies to second reading with changes to Policy 401.7 meal expenses.  Policies included were 400, 401.1, 401.2, 401.3, 401.4, 401.5, 401.5R1, 401.6, 401.7, 401.8, 401.9, 401.12, 401.14, 401.15, 402.2, 402.3, 402.4, 402.5, and 402.6.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Reports

 

Student Board Member, Mattie Hallberg, reported that Kids Captains for ball games have been selected and parents will be notified shortly, a fundraising campaign for The Wounded Warrior Project is in progress with t-shirt order open until January 17, Veterans will be honored at the January 28 basketball games, Shave-A-Thon and Pie-In-The-Face fundraising event will happen on the January 31st.  Student Council will be doing a Valentine Holiday Gram, NE Iowa Student Council Meeting is coming up in Mason City, and Student Council enjoyed a day of snow tubing over the winter break.

 

Larry Meyer, High School Principal, reported that the Winter Concert was a wonderful way to go into the holiday break, Dorian Musical Festival is happening today, State and Civil Rights reports are in progress and winter sports are going well.

 

Denise Mueller, Middle School Principal, stated that she is happy to be back, girls basketball and boys wrestling have completed and boys basketball and girls wrestling is now in full swing, a Winter Formal dance was held on January 10, FAST testing is begun, annual ski and skating trips are being planned, and Special Education teachers will meet with AEA to discuss extended summer services.

 

Abbey Cottrell, Assistant Elementary Principal, reported that Lexy Johnson has begun as full-time teacher, the 100th day will be at the end of the month barring no weather cancellations, math curriculum is being investigated, and state testing training is being conducted.

 

Tim Dugger, Superintendent/Elementary Principal, reported that the annual budget workshop is January 30, two special budget hearings will be held like last year, State Legislative session has begun.  The Board toured the bus barn and will be discussed at the next board meeting.

 

President Roys adjourned the meeting at 6:32 p.m.  The next regular meeting is scheduled for February 10, 2025, at 6:00 in the Monona Schoolhouse.
